Cinnamon Roll Steel Cut Oats

Sharing is caring!

I love oatmeal for breakfast, It’s warm, satisfying, and hearty enough to get me to lunchtime.  I have baked it, topped it with fruit, and made it seasonal with pumpkin spice, but this has to be my family’s favorite way to enjoy a hot breakfast. And this isn’t ordinary oatmeal you might have become accustomed to in the U.S.,  this recipe for cinnamon roll oatmeal uses Flahavan’s Irish Steel Cut Oatmeal.  The toothsome texture and excellent flavor of this particular brand of steel cut oatmeal give this breakfast dish a wonderful heartiness and texture.

If you are new to steel-cut oats, I should explain that they are a less processed version of the old-fashioned and quick-cooking oats you already know. All oats start out the same, as an oat groat.  Rolled oats, both old-fashioned and quick cook are steamed, rolled, steamed again and toasted, ending up as thin flakes. Steel cut oats are made from oat kernels that have been chopped into thick pieces. They all contain the same pieces and parts, but the different processing procedures explain why steel-cut oats take longer to cook.

You can find steel cut oats in any larger grocery store, although they might not be where you expect them to be! I found Flahavans Irish Steel Cut Oatmeal in the international foods aisle of Wegmans, it is definitely worth the effort to seek out Flahavan’s Irish Steel Cut Oatmeal outside of the breakfast aisle.

Steel-cut oats shine in the texture and flavor departments. They are exceptionally creamy and delicious, especially if you toast them beforehand as instructed in the recipe below. Steel cut oats do take a little longer to cook, but you can find tons of different ways to prepare steel cut oats on Pinterest, from slow-cooker preparation to cooking in a  pressure cooker, and even overnight oats there is bound to be a technique that fits into your lifestyle.  I prefer to prepare mine as directed by Alton Brown, the end result is exceptional flavor and creaminess, and only takes about 25 minutes.

This is an indulgent bowl of oatmeal, but if you would like to keep things on the healthier side, and steel cut oats are very healthy, you are in full control of how much cinnamon topping and cream cheese glaze you drizzle on your bowl of steel cut oatmeal.
