June 2017 Free Fishing Weekend in New York State

During Free Fishing Days/Weekends, anyone can fish the fresh or marine waters of New York State and no fishing license or recreational marine fishing registry is required!

New York is home to some great fishing, and this weekend you can fish for free! June 24-25, 2017 you can get out and experience the great fishing on the lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams of New York, no fishing license required!

I took my kiddos to Canandaigua Pier yesterday and they dropped their lines in the water for a while, we didn’t catch much but they had a good time, and I got some video footage for this video.

If you find yourself hooked on fishing after the free fishing weekend, You will need a fishing license if you are 16 years and older and fishing for:

  • Freshwater fish species by angling, spearing, hooking, longbow, and tip-ups.
  • Frog species by spearing, catching with the hands or by use of a club or hook. (Nope, I didn’t make this up, apparently, frog “fishing” is truly a thing)
  • Freshwater baitfish for personal use.

A fishing license will run you about $25 a year (ages 16-69), or $5 a year (ages 70 and over), 1 day and 7-day licenses are available also. There are exemptions to the fishing license (fishing in farm ponds etc.) Check out all the details at the NYS DEC Website
